We are natural procrastinators. At this very moment, I'm debating if I should type this post tomorrow ?. But no way am I letting my son make fun of me. So, I'm typing away. And my son making fun of me is part of the structure I created for myself to bust procrastination. Here are the 5 steps to the structure:
- Identify 5 tasks you want to accomplish the next day - put the most difficult task (Goliath) at the top. Research from Northwestern and Harvard suggests doing the hardest thing first makes it easier to achieve one’s goals.
- Share the list (could be a simple Google Sheet) with an accountability buddy. In my case, its my son - nothing would make his day more than embarrassing me!
- Knock out Goliath and the rest should be (relatively) straightforward
- Let buddy know if you haven't finished any of your tasks
- Repeat regularly (every day if possible)
Like a lot of time management skills, doing this is not as easy as flipping a switch. But do it well, and see your productivity shoot up!
The key is to make this a habit. An intention you can keep every day.
