Delegation – A Powerful Work-Life Balance And Professional Success Tool
You have seen them. Married couples with extremely successful careers, 4 kids and somehow a very peaceful life. There is something magical about how they maintain their work-life balance. The magic is called 3 full-time nannies. Translation: Delegation - a time and life saver. One can wonder how happy people are delegating an important thing like child care to such an extent, and from all indications, they couldn’t be happier. And rightfully so, given how much more sanity and time are preserved for more important things in "their life" (career growth with strong financial foundations for kids, affording long family holidays, etc.). This delegation muscle also extends to their professional front. In addition to saving time, and energy, delegation helps leaders grow and build followership at work. Obviously, many of us can't afford full-time nannies. But we can leverage delegation to support each other and play to our strengths and goals. And before we talk about the how, it helps to lay out the benefits. Here are 3 of them that go beyond time savings:
- Improve your focus. If you're doing too many things, delegation helps you focus on things that matter. Things that make you happier / that lead to the biggest rewards
- Groom leaders and develop skills. As colleagues look to fill gaps that can help further their careers, delegation could help them fill those gaps in your team / company
- Reward colleagues. If you've got a project that a colleague is interested in, consider bringing them onboard and giving them extra responsibility - it’s a win-win!
And delegation doesn’t have to be driven by hierarchy and can be done at any level.
We'll talk about the "how" on another post.
